Quick & Clever Bathroom Design Tips from Architect Your Home

Whether you’re dealing with an awkward layout or a compact cloakroom, small design moves can make a big difference. Here are our top tips for getting more from your bathroom space – as featured in Livingetc.

1. Steal space from over the stairs

In tight bathrooms near staircases, consider repositioning the basin so it cantilevers over the stairwell. With careful planning, you can still achieve the head height needed for the stairs while gaining valuable floor area inside the bathroom.

2. Keep the floor clear

Bathroom clutter like toilet brushes, bins, and laundry baskets can visually shrink the space – and become toe-stubbing hazards. At Architect Your Home, we often design false walls to conceal these neatly, creating a cleaner and more spacious feel.

3. Add a pop of personality

In small cloakrooms, quirky taps or bold fittings can draw attention away from compact basins and bring a touch of fun. Don’t be afraid to introduce colour or texture to elevate the mood of the space.

4. Let the ceiling do the work

Vaulted ceilings or slimline rooflights can dramatically improve natural light and ventilation. Even small interventions in the ceiling plane can transform how a bathroom feels – especially in loft conversions.

5. Plan for the practical stuff

Toilet roll, spare toothpaste, cleaning products – every bathroom needs them, but nobody wants to see them. Built-in storage behind false walls or within vanity units can keep everything within reach but out of sight.

6. Think about how you’ll clean it

Standalone baths look great, but how will you clean behind or under them? Consider a handheld shower hose that doubles as a rinse tool – and allow space for servicing cables or plumbing. Good design is in the detail.
