When Mr Keelan consulted Architect Your Home, there was a severe lack of natural light in his home and his kitchen felt outdated; he was desperate for a cooking and socialising area that was modern and practical, but that was timeless enough to last.
Mr Keelan’s brief had three criteria: to increase the available living space in his kitchen and dining area, to improve the warmth of the property as a whole and to increase the light coming into the house. He also wished to refurbish his large living and music room to the front of the house. Unusually for a side extension, Mr Keelan was keen to keep the existing narrow passageway down the side of his kitchen that allows him direct access from his living room to the patio, so it was essential the architect found a solution around this tiny obstacle. He also needed plenty of light to help brighten up the downstairs space.
Architect Your Home came up with an imaginative and successful plan that hit the mark on all the points in Mr Keelan’s brief – by shifting the kitchen area towards the hall from its original position overlooking the garden, and by widening the room by a metre, the architect created a great dining area complete with chic bi-fold doors to provide more light. A mullioned window and a skylight took yet more advantage of the aspect. The final touch was to use two sets of Crittall doors in the lounge and music room; one leading to the garden and the other adjoining the hall. The result is a bright and spacious feel across the whole of the downstairs.
