Dramatic roof to chef's kitchen extension in Hackney
With the customer being a chef, they wanted a kitchen that was first and foremost functional but she also wanted it to be an inspirational and aesthetically exciting space to work in.
Since the space available was not extensive the drama and excitement requested in the customers brief were cleverly created by designing an angled roof with triangulated roof lights The primary requirements were for increased living space, storage and light, all of which were achieved with the final result but there was an added bonus of the space feeling much larger than had been anticipated, due to the masses of light let in by the inventive design of the roof. The feature brick wall was constructed entirely using bricks from the old structure and the old kitchen and appliances were sold on eBay.
The kitchen originally was very small, and when we bought the property extending it was going to be the first thing we did. Six years down the line, and we’ve finally got round to it! We were very impressed with Tom's creativeness, who specially designed the roof over the kitchen which allows in a tremendous amount of light without using too much glass, and also gives the room a taller feel.
The project required planning permission but there were no major problems during the build, just the usual issues with suppliers being late. But I think the fact that we used Architect Your Home for the design service, detailed drawing, putting together a schedule of works, as well as some general follow up meetings and help with some of the more technical suppliers really helped a lot and kept the project on track.Watch Video
