The design brief for this renovation was to create a stunning home that fully expressed the wonderful original features and materials of the old barn. It also required some simplification and opening up of the complicated roof structure, to make it useable bedroom space and to provide a connection between the previously disconnected ends of the barn.
They say first impressions matter and here they certainly have an impressive impact as the architect took out walls and floors to create a stunning double-height entrance space. The original stone walls were discovered and so the architect exposed them as a backdrop to a full-height window that provides views through the hallway to the open countryside beyond. The first floor is accessed via a lightweight stone spiral staircase and the contemporary bridge connects both old and new as well as either end of the barn.
