Stunning renovation of 18th century barn

The brief was to create a better entrance lobby and stair to the first floor, simplify and open up the complicated roof structure, to make it useable bedroom space and to provide a connection between the previously disconnected ends of the barn.

By removing the existing utility room and toilet that were previously located in the entrance area along with the area of floor above, the architect was delighted to discover the original stone walls and so exposed them to create a dramatic double height space. The full height window gave views through to the open countryside beyond and the contemporary bridge connected both old and new and either end of the barn.
